A South Carolina man was arrested after police found his home, where he lived with a vulnerable adult and a 1-year-old child, in "appalling" condition.
Justice Anderson, 25, was charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk and neglect of a vulnerable adult after police responded to his home on Manlicher Drive in Orangeburg, South Carolina. According to the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, staff at the MUSC Health hospital in Orangeburg reported that a 1-year-old child had suffered "serious injuries" on Sept. 4. Deputies went to the home where the baby lived and said they found "a neglect and abuse situation."
Inside the home, deputies found a "vulnerable" 42-year-old woman "in a bed full of maggots and rotten food."
According to the sheriff's office, the home was in "deplorable" condition. In a Facebook post, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said the home was "cluttered with trash, insect-infested, without running water or electricity." He added, "The conditions of this home were absolutely and disgustingly appalling."
The relationship between Anderson, the baby, and the woman was not immediately disclosed.
Anderson was arrested and booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center, where he remains in custody. He appeared in court on Sunday and was granted $175,000 bond, which has not been posted, according to online jail records. He is due back in court on Oct. 13.
The conditions of the baby and the woman were not immediately made public.
