A Georgia man will spend decades behind bars for dousing a woman with gasoline and setting her on fire after she confronted him about using her debit card without permission to spend $100 on gas.

Roger Evans, 52, was sentenced to 30 years in prison followed by 10 years probation after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, the Jones County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.

An arrest affidavit obtained by the Jones County News said the incident occurred April 24 in Augusta. Evans asked her to drive him to a gas station to buy gas for the generator that was powering his home.

The victim became upset she received an alert on her phone saying Evans used her debit card to buy $100 in gas.

She and Evans began arguing as soon as they returned home. Evans had the gas can in his hand and dumped gas all over the victim before threatening to ignite her while flicking a lighter, the affidavit reportedly said.

The victim caught fire and started screaming. A witness heard the victim and ran to help. Evans used a blanket to put out the flames but the victim was seriously injured.

Evans and the witness loaded the victim into Evans' car and rushed her to a hospital. Evans called 911 on the way.

Authorities said the victim suffered "extensive injuries and was hospitalized for several months while receiving treatment and beginning her long road to recovery."

"Most importantly, we hope this resolution brings some measure of peace and closure to the victim. We continue to wish her strength and healing as she moves forward in her recovery," the sheriff's office wrote.

The press release did not specify the relationship between Evans and the victim.
