About this position

Our ideal candidate is an Assignment Editor with at least 5 years of experience in a local market. A candidate who is used to meeting strict deadlines. We prefer a candidate with strategic knowledge of court systems and government open records. Experience in news or journalism is required. This role will assist the assignment manager in tracking trials, gaining camera access from courts/judges to those trials, and hunting down open records requests. Law&Crime is a competitive and fast-paced network in the ever-evolving media landscape

Who we're looking for

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent knowledge of how to get to the right person to obtain needed assets, such as documents or videos.
  • Fast turnaround time; Strict adherence to tight deadlines.
  • Experience working with broadcast, website and other digital departments.
  • 5 years of professional work experience in related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. Preferred area of study: Communication or Journalism.
  • Experience and an ability to communicate and work collaboratively with internal and external teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and act independently and proactively.
  • Ability to work remotely with a solid internet connection.

Your responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Develop contacts with police agencies.
  • Maintain a comprehensive calendar of FOIA requests and when to follow up.
  • The tenacity to dig through a report.
  • Research interesting stories and obtain video elements.
  • Track court cases through their lifetime.
  • Obtain court documents and exhibit videos.
  • Uphold and enforce Law & Crime Network’s national standards and practices, editorial and branding guidelines.
  • Research related media trends and stay up to date on technology, news and trends to assist in keeping Law & Crime Network and its streaming offerings both competitive and true to our mission.
