Tenant thanks homeowner who was helping him and wife back on their feet with rent-free house by repeatedly plunging a knife into his chest: Cops

A 37-year-old Georgia man thought he was helping out a friend in need with a rent-free home, but he ended up getting stabbed to death, authorities say.

Jacob Brady is facing murder and aggravated assault charges in the death of 37-year-old Josh Addison, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office said. Deputies responded Sunday night to a home in the 300 block of Amsterdam Way in Dallas, Georgia, and found a man on the back porch "covered in blood."

Inside the home, they found Addison, who had suffered multiple stab wounds in the chest. Doctors declared him dead at a hospital.

Brady was taken into custody. He remains in the Paulding County Jail without bond. His next court date was not immediately listed.

Cops told local Fox affiliate WAGA that Addison was allowing Brady and his wife to move into the home after the couple went through a rough patch. But as they were moving in, there was an argument, and Brady allegedly stabbed Addison several times.

Brady's wife called 911 after finding Addison.

"My husband attacked him with a knife," she said, according to the call obtained by NBC affiliate WXIA.

Addison's family told the outlet how the situation came to be. They said Brady had recently been released from jail and he and his wife needed a place to stay.

The victim offered his home to the couple rent-free until they found a more permanent living situation. That was emblematic of the person Addison was, family members say.

"His heart was for those that didn't have anything and not that Josh had much, but he would give you whatever he had to try and take care of you," his mother, Ann Gazell, said in an interview with WXIA.

This isn't the first tragedy the family has suffered. Addison is the third child Gazell has lost — one died shortly after childbirth, and her daughter died of cancer at age 24.

Addison and his brother were known to prank their sister.

"Tyler and Josh were notorious for ganging up on their sister, hiding plastic bugs in her bed or putting fake poop on things," she recalled with a smile.

A GoFundMe described Addison as "loving, caring and kind." He leaves behind a teenage daughter.

"He had a beautiful heart, and when he brought you in as a friend, he would do anything he could to help wherever possible," the GoFundMe description said.
