A mother in Ohio is facing significant time behind bars after admitting to causing the death of her toddler by neglecting to provide him with necessary medical treatment.
This week, Niesha Walls, 35, pleaded guilty to one count each of endangering children, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault over the death of her 2-year-old son Noell Walls and alleged neglect of her other children, according to Cuyahoga County court records.
The investigation began in August 2024 after police and paramedics performed a welfare check at the mother's apartment on Anita Kennedy Avenue in Cleveland's Kinsman neighborhood.
Responding officers found the little boy "unresponsive" and noted that the residence was in "deplorable conditions," according to a report by Cleveland-based NBC affiliate WKYC.
Lifesaving efforts ultimately failed, and Noell died at home. Authorities later determined the boy had a medical condition that went untreated.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that Noell died by homicide caused by "caregiver neglect in the setting of chronic illness."
Meanwhile, investigators found two other children in the unit, 9 and 11 years old, who appeared to be "severely malnourished." They were treated at a nearby hospital and eventually recovered.
"It is unimaginable to think a mother would do nothing while her children starved," Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley said at the time of the defendant's arrest. "The number one duty of a parent is to provide care for their children and Niesha Walls failed in that duty. We will do everything in our power to get justice for Noell."
The Wednesday plea deal is a significant departure from the charges and legal jeopardy the defendant previously faced.
Walls was initially charged with one count each of involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault, as well as three counts of endangering children.
Later, she was formally indicted on a wider array of charges, including two counts each of murder and felonious assault, three counts of endangering children, and one count of involuntary manslaughter.
At Walls' plea hearing, Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Brian Mooney ordered a presentencing investigation that includes a psychiatric examination to determine whether Walls' mental state was a factor in her crimes.
The defendant is slated to be sentenced on Sept. 30, records show.
